Four perfect days on Lake Mohave

We had one week to spend in the Lake Mohave area and our intentions were to travel all the way around the lake, hitting up four or five different camp sites along the way.  All that went out the window when we arrived at our first stop at the end of Cottonwood Road outside Kingman, AZ.  At first we weren’t sure which spot to choose of the many beautiful and available sites until we found one located in a picturesque cove that was completely blocked from the rising winds.  We had the option of setting up camp on a flat, sandy landing about 100 feet from the water or parking right on the water’s edge.  Although the beach was rocky, you can’t beat camping right one the water so that’s what we did.

Four perfect nights came to an end all too quickly.  Although I imagine this being a popular destination during the summer, we only saw one other person while we were there and felt as though we had the entire lake to ourselves.  The water was clearer than anything I’d seen since I went to Cancun many years ago and the mild 60-70 degree temps were a treat being that it was December.

Below: Cottonwood Rd. was well maintained with the exception of some washboard.

At night, the only light that could be seen was the glow of Laughlin, NV far, far off in the distance.

  • oh! Gorgeous campsite! We are headed out next weekend to camp out of Mesquite in the Gold Butte area (Jeep/Tent camping). Cannot wait until we get a four-wheel camper! Thanks for the gorgeous pics! Looks like you had an amazing time.

    • Yes, this was one of those perfect trips that you never want to end! I’d never heard of the Gold Butte area until a few days ago. It’s been added to our long list of places to visit. Have a great trip!

  • Wow! That is a really beautiful spot! It’s great that you guys were able to camp right on the edge of the water too. Thanks for the coordinates, hopefully we can check this spot out next year 🙂

  • We are planning a trip to Joshua Tree and Lake Mohave in the next few weeks! Did you take Cottonwood road to where it Y’s out at Pot cove road or Willow tree road to Carp cove? So many coves!! The GPS coordinates took me to Carp cove on Willow tree road on google maps. I just found your blog and love it!! We are planning to become nomads starting in May and also live in Colorado. Moved to Dolores from Seattle. Love it here!!

    • We loved Dolores the one week we spent there a few springs ago! How are you liking it there?

We actually camped on the East side of Lake Mohave just across the lake from Cottonwood Cove. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the West side of the lake. We loved where we stayed but it was a pretty rough ride to get there and the last time we went the road had gotten really washed out. Hopefully you can find some good spots in the area you’re looking. It’s a really beautiful area, especially this time of year. Have a great trip!

      • Oh okay, so across from Cottonwood Cove resort? We will be on the east side of the lake as well. I thought you mentioned the spot being at the end of Cottonwood road. I’m sure we’ll find a good spot, just really liked the one you guys had found.

Dolores is lovely. Definitely will come back. Great little town with great people.

        • My bad! I read your e-mail wrong. Yes, we took Willow Tree Road to Carp Cove. There are several options once you get down there. I hope the road is in better shape than when we were there. But..as long as you take it slow you should be fine. I hope you enjoy that area as much as we have!

          • We made it to Lake Mohave yesterday. It is so amazing here! The road down to the water looked like it had recently been graded and graveled. We plan to stay here for four or five nights. It even has great cell coverage for internet connectivity so my husband can work. Best office ever! Thank you for help in getting us here!!! We got the idea from your blog site!! Will most definitely be back!!

          • Annie, I’m so glad to hear that! And am also a little jealous, that’s definitely one of our all-time favorite spots! That’s great to hear about the road. It had gotten so bad last time we were there, we were wondering if it was ever maintained. Have a great time!

          • Michele, Just enjoyed 4 wonderful days at your spot on lake Mohave(met Annie and Kevin). Thank you for your blog and the pics! Absolutely lovely there!
