Next time you find yourself in the Las Vegas area, do yourself a favor and take a little detour to Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Northshore Road winds around the western side of Lake Mead offering expansive views of jagged mountains and stunning red rock formations. We stopped at the North Shore Summit Trail where an easy 1/4 mile walk uphill rewarded us with breathtaking 360º views of the area. It wasn’t until discovering Northshore Road that we realized Nevada is just another place with massive amounts of public land begging to be explored.
From Boulder City, Nevada take Lakeshore Road to Northshore Road
From Henderson, Nevada take Highway 564 (East Lake Mead Parkway) to Northshore Road
End in Overton, Nevada where you can return the way you came or connect to Interstate 15 to return to Vegas
$10 for a 7 day pass to enter Lake Mead National Recreation Area
Worth the stop:
North Shore Summit Trail between mile marker 20 & 21. Hike 1/4 for panoramic views.

Nearby dry camping areas:
Government Wash & Crawdad Cove (due to their proximity to Las Vegas we found the unfortunate amount of litter deter us from staying longer in these otherwise beautiful areas)
