10 days at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, AZ

A few years ago we passed thru Cottonwood, AZ and I’ve been wanting to go back ever since.  In mid-December I was excited to finally be getting back there for a proper stay.  We didn’t have any solid plans and ended up staying 10 days at Dead Horse Ranch State Park just a couple of miles from Old Town Cottonwood.  With lows hovering around freezing, it was the perfect time to be at a campground with electricity.  Although it got chilly at night, every day was sunny, 65 degrees and no wind…damn near perfect in my book.

We ended up loving Cottonwood as much as we suspected we might.  So much so that it was hard to peel ourselves away after 10 days.  With a wide variety of delectable restaurants a short bike ride away as well as hiking and biking trails surrounding the park, and the perfect weather, we couldn’t have asked for a better stay at this state park.

If you ever find yourself in Cottonwood, there are two places you must stop.  Bocce Pizzeria for mouth-watering pizza and a patio you’ll never want to leave.  Crema Craft Kitchen for the best breakfast in Arizona.  Seriously, the restaurants alone in this town could have kept us happy for a while : )

Being set up at the state park gave us the opportunity to scout out good boondocking campsites around the area without having to take the trailer with us.

The historic copper mining town of Jerome is only 15 minutes from Cottonwood.  It’s an awesome little town built in to the side of Cleopatra Hill with tons of character.  A really cool little town to explore.

I have a feeling Cottonwood only gets better come Spring once all the trees bloom.  Don’t be surprised if we end up back here again soon!
